Title: HMS Ben-my-Chree
Post by: Tony Walker on July 15, 2019, 07:58:58 PM
HMS Ben-my-Chree was a passenger liner converted to a seaplane carrier in WW!.  She was commanded  from May 1916 by Charles Samson of the RNAS, the first naval officer to gain a pilots licence.

Michael Gould lists (1B1) the censor mark shown on the attached cover, as 'claimed to be from Ben-my-Chree' in both editions of his handbook.

One of my covers had the familiar pencil note from Frank stating the cover was from this ship.  Has it been confirmed meantime?  Neither of my covers give any indication which would help in identifying the ship of origin.  The ship was sunk in January 1917 by Turkish gunfire.

Any comments anyone?
