Title: Cover of the Day 4 May: Black Rhino
Post by: Michael Dobbs on May 04, 2020, 12:21:28 PM
My cover of the day is yet another commemorative item - in July 1970 an advanced HQ of 6th Infantry Brigade moved from the UK to St Sebastian (or San Sebastian) Barracks, Korbecke in Soest, West Germany (BFPO 106).  In 1971 the title of the Brigade was changed to the 6th Armoured Brigade.

At the same time the Link with the 2nd Division was broken and the Brigade came under command of 4th Armoured Division. In recognition of both changes the historic Brigade sign of the crossed key and bayonet was changed to the black Rhino. This was the senior unallocated armoured Brigade sign, having belonged to the 10th Armoured Brigade during the Second World War.

The attached cover commemorates the change of formation sign on 4 June 1973 - postmarked FIELD POST OFFICE 235 on 4 JU 73.
