Title: Base APO Y August 1919
Post by: Chris Grimshaw on April 07, 2014, 04:22:21 AM
Hi All

A mystery cover from Base Army Post Office Y, 9th August 1919.

Censored by Type 7/ 491, which is unallocated by FD & John Slingsby in his book, "The Postal History of the Army of the Black Sea 1918-23

Cover also shows a cachet which I've never seen before and can find no record of in the same red ink, "CONSTANTINOPLE 1 ALLIED ARMIES.

Addressed to London where it was received 20th August 1919, signed by Asbourne I believe.

Any help appreciated, I've sent a paper copy to John Slingsby for his views.

Chris

Not seen this cachet before.
Logical sequence of censor marks - 490 GHQ [British}
                                                        491 Allied GHQ

7/490 APO Y 30SP19 from GHQ Constantinople seen by me.

7/491 also seen by me with H12 on 21FE19 and 7JA19 - no unit

Hello Chris
Oct 1918 Army List has no Ashborne / Ashbourne nor similar.  Maybe it is OWA or ODA with a name beginning with the S but I cannot make it out and there are quite a number of pages of S in the index.
