My wife is compiling her family tree and has come across a member of the family who was born in Corfu in 1857. His father was later a policeman in Oxford but why would he have been in Corfu (or at least why was his wife there?) Was he at that time in the Army, we wonder?
Can anyone point me in the direction of finding out which British troops were part of the garrison there at that time?

Hi Alan, Corfu was the main admin site for the British Ionian Islands, so he could have been part of the admin team, or maybe a policeman already. There was a Post Office packet service to the port so he may even have been part of the postal organisation. Can't help with Army stuff - sorry! Colin
We now think the child was born en route to Corfu and registered there. Still don't know why they were there though
British Forces in Corfu on google should bring up some sites which might help.
