Wayne Schnarr has 2680 recorded as the Royal Canadian Regiment. Nothing in Daniel or AK's ledger

However, the ledger records No 2580 with FPO99 in September 1916 (1st Security Period), which Proud allocates to the 1st South African Brigade. I don't have a copy of the South African Army Postal Service to check further

Can you make out the CM No?

I can't answer your questions, but assuming the Seahorse is from the re-engraved set issued in 1934, this is not particularly late. The KGVI high values were not issued until 1939 (2s6d on 4th September) and may not have been available where the sender was located in 1941.

This assumes there was a good reason for applying the higher value stamp of course

I am posting this on the off-chance that a member will have information which could clarify my query around the structure of the Portuguese army in France and make sense of the abbreviations.

I am attaching a copy of a cover addressed to Manual Costa, 6th BMM (amended to 2nd BMM). I cannot work out what the BMM might stand for.

I am also attaching a copy of the first page of a service record, which I think is his, which also shows the 6th BMM. However, it gives his unit as 1st battalion, 18th regiment. Wiki gives a breakdown of the units making up each brigade, but only quotes battalions, not regiments. There is no 18th battalion listed.

Does anyone have any ideas about this or sources of information which might clarify this?

It looks like I Muncey to me, but all I can find is a member of the Rifle Brigade in India to 1898

All three places of origin of these covers are in the South African province of Kwa-Zulu previously Natal. This suggests a location of the censor stamp in that area, especially if other covers from the ship do not bear the stamp. It would be interesting to see these to see where they originated

I have not found anything to suggest that the voyage of the ship started in Durban before calling at Cape Town but Durban seems to have been a frequent port of call in other voyages

I have found him on Ancestry -

Eric Frank Wilday, born 7th April 1916, Coventry Warwickshire UK, T/184445 Pte EF Wilday, 666 General Transport Company, EA ASC, Middle East Forces 1944, died April 1990, Warwickshire.

Not sure what the "T" stands for

Good shot Malcolm. The signature on the Attestation Paper matches the one on the card. Like Peter, I read the second letter of his unit as a "U", but looking again, it is obviously an "M"...

I had got as far as thinking he might be in a Canadian unit, as he doesn't seem to appear on FWR or Ancestry, but the "U" was stumping me

Just answered my own question. There is a long listing on Jim Forte's website, covering the whole world.

It lists 807 in Br Guiana but also France and Germany. There is a suggestion on Roberts that some numbers may be unit specific, rather than location. This might explain the listing for 807

Thanks Howard. I rather hoped it might be, but it is good that the sender noted his location on your cover.

I have tried searching on SW Roberts website but it gives locations in France and Germany. There is a cover on ebay with this number but again no sender's address. There is a pencil note on the reverse suggesting it is from Br Guiana but no evidence.

I have searched APO857 on Roberts and it comes up as Atkinson Field, Georgetown, Br Guiana. I have a cover with this number but again the only evidence is a pencil note.

Is there any definitive listing of these numbers?

I'm attaching a scan of a cover franked American Base Forces APO807 dated Nov 11 1941. It also bears an Army Examiner stamp 401.

There are no senders details and the reverse is blank

Can anyone tell me where this originated from, or point me in the direction of where I can find out?

I have heard back from Paul Farrimond, co-author of the book Michael showed me and he said it is not an "F" but a mark the result of dirt on the stamp. He copied another example to me which seems to support this.

I asked him about the "A" on the example in the book but have not heard back

The date of the franking is DE 28 41
