Many thanks for all the help and information, I had just ordered a copy of Camp Postmarks of the United Kingdom by Kingston and I have got a 1993 copy of Collecting British Postmarks I had forgot that they were listed in this publication, think it is time to buy a new copy.
Once again many thanks to all that replied with help

Thanks for the reply , I have the Proud book and also the Kennedy and Crabb book but they don't list the camps, only in the (HD) Home Depot series but these are not what I am after.
I am looking for information regarding the army camps that were in use and there post marks for example I have cards for Clover Field Park Camp and for Press Heath Camp both camps were in Whitchurch and I have both single and double ring type postmarks dating from 1915 through to 1918.
I know that there was a publication done in the 1970s which I think was called Camp Postmarks of the United Kingdom by R.A.Kingston and was done by this society, but not sure if this covers what I am after, if anyone has a copy and might send me an image of one of its pages regarding ww1 army camps to see if this book would cover my requirements
Again many thanks

Hello,
can anyone help with information regarding British Army camp postmarks used in the Great War, I have looked on the net with not much luck.
what I am after is a list of army camp that were in use and there postmarks as I have a few cards that are for the same camp but with different style of postmarks.
Are there any publications that might show and list British Army camp postmarks, I know that most of the camp would have been used as training and holding camps.
I would like to try and put some collection together for British camps from WW1.
Many thanks for any help or information

Not sure if this is the correct subject to be putting on this forum but they are military issue and I do have many covers for this subject.
Over the past few years of collecting WW1 British military covers I have also collected many covers from different European  countries with occupation stamps, I am now trying to put together a collection of occupation issue and military issue stamps.
I have done a list of countries I think issued stamps while in occupation also countries that issued military or fund raising stamps.
I don't want countries that issued war tax or war fund as I already have a collection of them.
if anyone has any other information or can point me in the direction of more information I would be very grateful

Members Discussion Forum / Help with F.P.O 36
October 22, 2015, 06:21:45 PM
Purchased this cover the other day but not sure what the F.P.O mark is on the back, I think that it might be one used by British forces in India but cant find much information as to when or by who.
It has F.P.O No 36 and dated 17th July 1915.
The front has a type 3/498 as this is recorded as being used by the 1st Battalion Highland Light Infantry, the battalion was in Ambala India in August 1914 moved to France December 1914 then to Mesopotamia December 1915.
The address on the front is to I think:
Mrs S.A.Finny ?
14 Stoneham Road
Upper Clapton
London.
I did a quick search on the internet for this address and it come up with a entry on the C.W.G.C. site for a Sidney. Aleck. Finn for this address, who was killed on the 26th October 1914 aged 31 while serving as lance corporal L/7796 with the 4th Battalion Royal Fusiliers.
Could this be the same person or am I reading the surname wrong.
Any information with the F.P.O. or the surname would be a great help.
Many Thanks Andy

I am trying to complete the write-up for this envelope but come to a bit of a dead end.
The envelope was posted in England on 14th October 1915 in Finsbury Park, Middlesex and sent to.
11499 Pte Parker.
11 platoon. C company. 1st Middlesex Regt.
British Expeditionary Force.
France.
But it has a strange cachet ' PRESENT LOCATION UNCERTAIN ' stamped across the address then in the top left corner written in pencil is the word 'Wounded ' with what looks like a signature but unable to work that out.
On the back of the envelope is a Field Post Office mark for 18 OCT but cant make out any more on this but should be 1915.
I found out he was wounded around the 27th September 1915 with a gun shot wound to his left hand as he was admitted to hospital on this date, but also on this date he was added to the sick convoy.
Does any one know what this means, was that the date he went onto the hospital ship.
The hospital ship he sailed on was called St David but have not been able to find much out, looking for any dates for this ship, where it sailed from and to.
Private Parker deserted on the 18th October 1915 some three weeks or so after being wounded, with this information I assume that he deserted once back in England.
My question is how would be the best way to write this up.
I am quite new to the writing up the presentation and not sure how much information to put on any write-ups.
Also if anyone can help with details about the hospital ship and where I might find information regarding sailing dates or any other information.
But mainly how to write it up as there is a lot of information, but I know that you can sometime put to much information and sometime not enough, any help would be a great help.
Many thanks,
Andy

Members Discussion Forum / War Tax Stamps WW1
May 05, 2015, 11:57:40 AM
I am looking for some information regarding War Tax stamps used in the First World War.
I have just purchased a card sent from Canada by a soldier that was back home in Canada recovering from wounds to his brother who was training  in England with the Canadian forces.
The card has a one cent green stamp on the back with War Tax stamped on it, after looking on the internet I did not realize that these stamps were used and how many British Commonwealth countries used them.
Canada was the first in February 1915 but there was about 27 countries used them then when Portugal entered the war in March 1916 six more Portuguese colonies were added.
My question is does anyone know of any reference material or books regarding this subject, information on the internet is a bit limited unless I am looking in the wrong place I keep seeing Stanley Gibbons reference numbers by some of the stamps but what catalogue would they be in, as I am not a stamp collector this is all new but I think I would like to try and collect some of these stamps.
Many thanks for any help or information regarding this ( sorry if it is not really a subject for this forum ) but I have always had response in the past from members of this forum.
Once again many thanks.

Hi Alistair,
Not sure if this is your man but there is no other Croft for the Suffolk Regiment that I can see.
the only information I can find is for a Lance Corporal 8582 Albert William Croft Suffolk Regiment.
From his medal index card he went to France 15th August 1914 and is entitled to a 1914 Star British War Medal and Victory Medal and a Silver Wounded Badge No B337799.
From the Silver Wounded Badge register he is down as a L/Sergt 8582 Depot Suffolk and his date for enlistment is 15th August 1912 and was discharged from service 18th October 1919 aged 25.
I cant find any other details yet but will have another look.
Hope this helps Andy

Thanks to every one that helped with information for this cover.
I have looked at the medal index cards for both Alexander Robert Leith and Albert Ingraham Paine, and both were awarded the D.S.O. plus many other awards.
Both served with the King's Royal Rifle Corps and Alexander Ingraham Paine was M.I.D. at least four times, twice in the Boer War and twice in the First World War.
He was also awarded C.M.G. and Alexander Robert Leith was awarded the O.B.E. and was also made Deputy Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire in 1939 and held the rank of Major.
When I do the write up for this card I hope I can get all the information on the page.
Once again many thanks.

Thanks Mike for the information, I assume that the details I put for the hand stamp and censor are correct, so  all I have to do now is try and work out the signature at the bottom left of the cover.
Many thanks.

Have been going through some of my recent covers and I am having some trouble with this cover.
It has a hand stamp for FPO 18 dated 25th June 1916 code A, FPO 18 is for 18th Brigade - 6th Division but the date of the card would put it in security phase I which would have used the hand stamp FPO 60, for the 60th Brigade - 20th Division.
It has a type 4 censor 2025 which was used by the 12th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps 60th Brigade - 20th Division.
The address looks like Lt Col A.R.Leith D.S.O.
60 Rifles, Lady ***********
****** Park
Winchester

I am unable to make out the signature at the bottom left of the cover also at the bottom right of the cover is TO HOSPITAL.
If any one can help with the address or signature it would be very helpful, also to confirm that I have all the other detail correct for the hand stamp and censor that would be great also.
Many Thanks.

Members Discussion Forum / Help Wanted WW1 Covers
April 13, 2014, 08:30:35 PM
As I am still fairly new to the collecting of WW1 postmarks, I wish to ask the advice of some of the other more experienced collectors on the forum.
A few weeks ago at a local stamp and postcard fair I purchased two groups of cards, there was 19 cards in one lot and 20 cards in the other.
the first group of cards were all sent by Sapper 219139 Robert Cunningham. Royal Engineers. it also has R.O.D. which stands for Railway Operating Division.
All the cards have been sent to either Mrs E.Cunningham or Mr A.Cunningham at Station House.Lochgelly.Fife-Shire.Scotland.
They all have the hand stamp Army Post Office S.50 which is for Cherbourg - France, recorded use 19th May 1917 to 26th July 1919 in the Proud book and the same in the Kennedy and Crabb book.
The cards are dated from 13th August 1917 to 15th April 1918.
From the 13th August 1917 to 12th September 1917 they all have Type 5 - 5168 censor, from the 13th September 1917 to the 2nd October 1917 they have Type 5 - 5679 and from the 21st October 1917 to 15th April 1918 they have Type 6 - 5199, I know that these are not recorded in the Frank Daniel book but does any one have any other information on these censors.
The second lot of cards are again sent by the same person but unable to find the details for this soldier but all the cards are sent to Mrs L.West on the first card and all the others are to Mrs L.Hart or H.Hart could be his wife with the address 17 New Street.Weedon.Northamptonshire.
The first card is not dated but has Type 1 - 1019 which is not recorded in Frank Daniel's book the other cards date from 29th December 1914 to 13th January 1915 with Type 2 -1494 used by 44th Brigade, 2nd Division Royal Field Artillery and a Army Post Office hand stamp 51 which I think is I Corps Railhead.
On the 15th January 1915 it has Type 2 -1457 ( 41st Brigade - 2nd Division ) no hand stamp.
The next card is dated 10th March 1915 with Type 2 - ? and hand stamp Field Post Office 6 ( 6th Brigade - 2nd Division ) the next card is 22nd April 1915 with Type 3 - 206 ( 44th Brigade - 2nd Division ) Royal Field Artillery and hand stamp Field Post Office 5 ( 5th Infantry Brigade - 2nd Division ) 19th May 1915 Type 3 -10? Field Post Office T.2 ( 2nd Division Train ) 21st May 1915 Type 3 - 206 Field Post Office T.2.
Then from the 19th June 1915 to 23rd June 1915 they all have Type 3 - 1321 Field Post Office T.2 and on the 24th June 1915 it has Type 3 - 1332 Field Post Office T.2 both 1321 and 1332 are not recorded in Frank Daniel's book.
Now for the question would you do a write up page for each card in the group with each card mounted and its own page with that cards details or one single page with all the information for all the other cards listed on just one page.
I don't know what other people do and it would be nice to know, also any other information on the hand stamps or censor marks would be a great help.
Many thanks Andy
