Not my collecting area- so need help! The cachet on this envelope from the USA to the Base Commander at Danoy Air Facility seems to indicate that it could not be forwarded from Buenos Aires because of hostilities. Is the cachet well known? Not sure if my scan is readable. Cachet is about 74x37mm. Heading; Buenos Aires (C.P.I.) Argentina. Then seven lines of text.

Hi Neil,
Many thanks for your reply. I think that you are correct with your suggestion that it could have been sent from the 'Royal Observatory at the Cape of Good Hope'. The air mail label is South African and the only reference that I could find before I posted was the Cape Town Observatory but I did not think it was possible.

Another from the Dr. Beer collection. The cachet is only partly clear. 'H.M. Astronome../ Royal Observatory/ Official Free. Dated 30/3/52. It has a British stamp and air mail label. Any suggestions where it might has come from?

Hi Mike,
Many thanks for excellent information. The only other information I can add to the RAF cover is that on the reverse in manuscript is written '788286 LAC Beer J. RAF'

I have a few covers sent to Arthur Beer an astronomer who had escaped from Germany to London in 1934. I know nothing about WW2 post and censor marks and have not been able to find out a simple fact. Where were these covers posted from in GB?

Did mail to the Serbian army in Salonika go from occupied Serbia to Vienna and then on to a poste restante in Switzerland before being sent to Salonika? I have covers that would suggest this but would like it confirmed.

Keith published an article I think in the FPHS Journal - although it might have been in some other place - stamp magazine ? Its title I think was 'A Foresters Tale'. It was about the POW experience of Fritz Fnadschek. I cannot find my FPHS Index which might solve the problem. I do not need the article but I would like the correct title and the date and number of the FPHS Journal.

Hi Mike and Alan,
I did not make myself very clear. It is the possible wording underneath 'Soldier's Gifts'. It could be a straight line but underneath that there seem to be two words.

Please can anyone help with this cachet on a pacel wrapper? DPO/ON ACTIVE SERVICE/SOLDIER'S GIRTS/?/?. Does the DPO stand for 'Divisional Post Office'? Does anyone know what the bottom part of the cachet should read?

Hi Chris,
Postage was free if sent by a civilian to a serviceman if they wrote 'feldpost' on the envelope. I don't think that Berlin 66 was anything to do with the military as I don't remember seeing it on any other mail to soldiers

Hi Chris,
Just means that writing 'Feldpost' on the mail entitled you to free postage if sending to someone in the services
