A hand-painted Chinese postcard sent by Capt. William Judson in Mukden to his son in Lexington, Kentucky. Postmarked in Mukden on 1 February 1905 (14 February new style). With censor handstamp reading "Seal of the General Headquarters Censorship Department." During the Russo-Japanese War, William Voorhees Judson [1865-1923] was US military attaché at the US embassy in St. Petersburg and with the Russian army in Manchuria. The battle of Mukden took place from 20 February to 10 March 1905, when the Russians retreated and the Japanese occupied Mukden and captured Judson. He was sent to Japan and allowed to return to the US, arriving on 20 April. During the latter half of 1917, Brig. Gen. Judson was once again US military attaché at the US embassy in Petrograd, as well as head of the US Military Mission to Russia.
