A cover sent to West Lynn, Massachusetts by Ernest Edgar Goodenough [1902 - ?], seaman on the destroyer USS Edsall. Inscribed "E. E. Goodenough, USS Edsall" and postmarked U. S. S. Scorpion on 9 July 1923. The Edsall served in the Black and Mediterranean Seas from 1922 to 1924. It was sunk by the Japanese in the Indian Ocean on 1 March 1942. Since there was no post office on the Edsall, its mail was turned over to the gunboat Scorpion, the station ship in Constantinople.

On Ancestry, there is an Ernest Edgar Goodenough, born Quincy, Norfolk, Mass in 1902, but it is on a private family tree, so no details are visible. It is possible to contact the tree owner for information.

Also a draft card from 1942 (20th March), giving his address as Lynn, Essex, Mass. DoB 3rd January 1902. Can't find a record of his death though

Alan Baker

His name doesn't appear on the list of casualties when she was sunk in 1943

Thanks, Alan. I did look on Ancestry, but I will try asking that private family tree custodian for more information.

Word of warning. Once you are given access to a tree, you get notified every time it gets updated

The private tree link turned out to be dead.
