A cover sent to Chester, South Carolina by Walter Gary Simpson [1896-1968], seaman on the armored cruiser USS Pittsburgh in the Mediterranean. Postmarked U. S. S. Pittsburgh on 8 June 1920. Inscribed "W. G. Simpson, U. S. Navy, U. S. S. Pittsburgh."

Letter excerpts:

Since leaving Constantinople we have visited Jaffa, Palestine and Jerusalem, Alexandria and Cairo, Egypt. Saw the pyramids and Sphinx. We left Alexandria Saturday afternoon at 6 o'clock. Will get in Malta about Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock. We are only making 8 knots an hour saving coal. We get mail, stores, and coal there. The natives will coal ship, taking on 2200 tons. Then we leave for England stopping in Italy, France, Spain, Gibraltar, Portugal, then France again then Southampton, England where we will dock for repairs. They say the ship is going to stay over here in these waters, will be station ship for Admiral Hughes at Southampton, England.
