Can any member please tell me why the date and time slugs have been removed from this Universal cancel.

Nick Colley

Ah, this is R11/521, isn't it? The recording we have of this is as you have it, Edward: anonymous, undated cancel, on 2 1/2d postage. The anonymity and lack  of date almost certainly relate to the postal security in the security zones around the coasts of the UK in the weeks leading up to D Day. We have a note  that this censor mark was used at Pilton near Barnstaple in April 1944 (and presumably a bit longer), but no corroboratory evidence for this has survived in our files.

Good evening Nick,

Thank you very much for the information, most useful.
Edward.
