A philatelic friend has sent me a query concerning the cover below which was sent by the Prince of Wales from HMS Renown during his tour of Australia and New Zealand in 1920.  The envelope contained an eight page letter to his mistress Mrs Freda Dudley Ward.

What is the seal on the reverse?  Is it particular to HMS Renown (I've not seen it before), is it a general naval seal or perhaps a personal seal from the future King Edward VIII

The 2d postage is the same as the inland rate, so was this treated as pacquet mail?

I can answer my own query on behalf of my friend.

Apparently the seal on the back of the cover, which looks like a spider was given to the Prince of Wales by the lady to whom the letter is addressed.

Oh! for romance and intrigue
