Hi All

Can any one read any of the 2 bits of text on the left had side of the cover.  The top one which i can make out hospital or the one at the bottom which reads via ss ?????? Any help would be good.

                                                     Thanks

                                                     Chris  ???

a) American export Lines' SS Exemplar made her maiden voyage in Nov. 1940 - Bombay, Calcutta, Colombo. The envelope is postmarked March 4th 1941 with instructions to meet SS Exemplar March 11th 1941 at Calcutta. Perhaps second voyage ?

b) Hospital city seems to be Jhansi - googling shows more than one missionary hospital + others in that city.

Hope that helps

Thanks for all your help. I now know the receiver of the letter in England had something to do with the Woman's Union hospitals in India. So i would think this was posted by a member of staff from that hospital. Also it is nice to know which ship carried the mail.

                                                              Cheers
