A simple query :

I have a WWI naval cover from RFA Celerol, an oiler in WWI (and in WWII probably, before being sunk by German anti-aircraft in the English Chanel on 18 August 1940).

It is addressed to The officer Commanding, M.G.U., Crystal Palace, Sydenham, London.

No date on cover, just the common 8 barred circle.

I cannot find any refrence to M.G.U.  Any offers?

Navy List, July 1916, p390m, lists a Machine Gun Company at Blandford Camp.
I expect there may have been something similar at Crystal Palace, (but where they could practice shooting?) but on the Crystal Palace pages the list is merely of officers by rank - no job titles.
As a guess M G U = Machine Gun Unit
What do the experts say ???
Good hunting everyone

Tony. I will check the Navy list but Crystal Palace was used by the RNAS, I think for stores and training. Michael
