Covers of the Day, 19th May - RCN in Korea

Week 9 just starting!

Following Mike's post relating to the Korean War, here are covers from two Canadian ships which took part in the conflict. Canada contributed eight destroyers to the UN force, the first three being despatched within days of war being declared. HMCS Cayuga was one of these first three and the ships were rotated throughout.

HMCS Cayuga was a Tribal class destroyer, built in Halifax NS and launched in 1945. She served three tours of duty in Korea, the last after the conflict ended. This cover bears a hand written sender's address on the reverse as from the ship.

The second cover is from the Commanding Office, HMCS Nootka, another Tribal class destroyer, again built in Halifax NS and launched in 1944. She served two tours in Korea, the first from November 1950 - July 1951.

The second was from February - December 1952. This cover dates from that period.

Both covers are franked at Victoria HM Dockyard, British Columbia. Mail presumably was shipped or flown there for onward transmission
