Cover of the Day 7 June 2020 - Headquarters POW Ship

Prisoner of war ship covers are scarce, by virtue of th fact that their use in WW1 was short duration Jan - Mar 1915 and the numbers held were low, typically civilian internees and merchant seaman from interned vessels.

Shown is a January 1915 cover to the Military Attache at the French Embassy in London sent from a Gules Steiger a POW of the Prison Ship Canada, at this time off the Isle of Wight. Cover is cancelled RYDE and shows the cachet HEAD QUARTERS 23 JAN 1915 PRISONER OF WAR SHIP (this is also know with the Headquarters removed) along with the P.C. cachet applied on board. Interesting that this should be a cover from what I assume to be a French National, although many French civilians were interned from the Alsace Lorraine region (ceded to Germany in the late 1800) with many towns split between French and German inhabitants.

Before the "picture" is published it would be a good thing to see if the sender can be traced on the ICRC cards.  This might confirm Peter's suggestion or establish some other story.
