CODE NUMBERS FOR BRITISH WARSHIPS REPAIRING OR REFITTING IN N AMERICAN DOCKYARDS. In Journal 265 the late lamented Bob Swarbrick discussed this subject, showing HMS Rodney as Code 82. The idea presumably was to attempt to disguise from the Germans that one of the RN's major units was out of action and under repair. The attached shows two covers sent from Milwaukee in Oct 1942, both to the same addressee, a Leading Radio Mechanic. The earlier dated 18 Oct is to: "No 1022, c/o Fleet Mail Office, RCN Dockyard Halifax. 11 days later the address has changed to "No S263, c/o British Naval Liaison Officer, Boston. Presumably the same ship, but not necessarily so I suppose. Can anyone say what ship(s) this was? Or point to a list of codes used for our ships repairing in N America in WW2?
