Why Boulogne address from Home Depot July 40?

Hi,

Can any one provide an explanation for this cover?

Dated 17 JY 40, presumably from Home Depot, it is addressed rather vaguely to the Boulogne Sub Area. Given Boulogne fell to the Germans on 25 May the address appears redundant.

The cover is back stamped with a single ring ARMY / POST OFFICE hand-stamp dated 26 JLY 40.

Hi Jim,

very interresting item! Without "return to sender" handstamp and without send to other part of army.

It is an error in the handstamp about the month? Two month earlier?

JY is the abbreviation for July in datestamps - January would be JA.  This is confirmed with the single ring ARMY / POST OFFICE backstamp of 26 JLY 40.

Jim: would it be possible to provide a scan of the reverse of the cover, showing the ARMY / POST OFFICE datestamp please.

Thanks, Mike

True, but did the clerk setting the date stamp up realise that?

Thanks for the responses.
I'm not sure if the Home Depot date stamp is wrong as the backstamp (attached) is clearly July.
