A cover sent to Everett, Massachusetts by Dewey Manila Knode [1898-1961], seaman first class on the USS South Dakota in Vladivostok. Postmarked U. S. S. South Dakota on 19 May 1920. Inscribed "U. S. Naval Forces, Vladivostok, Siberia," "D. M. Knode, U. S. S. South Dakota, Asiatic Fleet, c/o Postmaster, San Francisco, Cal.," and "Sailor's Mail." The armored cruiser South Dakota, flagship of America's Asiatic Fleet, was docked in Vladivostok from 12 January 1920 to 11 March and from 26 April to 21 May. Knode was named in honor of Admiral Dewey's 1898 victory at Manila Bay. He enlisted in 1916 and was discharged in 1921.
