Our Webmaster (Bob Bruce) received the following enquiry from member Thomas Johansen in
Abu Dhabi with the question: "I was wondering if someone could tell me anything about this naval censor mark and when and why it was used"

One for our naval specialists !

Many thanks and have a good Christmas to all, Mike  :)

It looks like Gould's 7C50, I think. If Thomas can provide the maximum and minimum dimensions of the outer-most and inner-most ovals, then we'll be able to confirm that  - or retract it, I suppose.  Dr.Gould notes that it has been recorded with a Bombay paquebot (date not mentioned). His update of 2016 states that it is from a transport vessel, although which one is not specified. It is likely to be most useful if Thomas can provide a scan of the entire item.

Hi Nick
Appreciate your feedback - it is a postcard from Muscat - but paid in England - doesn't carry Muscat or Bombay transit stamps but the writing indicates Persian Gulf origin.
I can not measure it as it doesn't belong to me at this time

Thanks, Thomas. Sadly, for reasons unknown, I can't open that file. Does anyone else have that problem here, or are my graphics file readers merely being temperamental?  :-\

Perhaps when you've won custody of the item, we can try again with a scan rather than a screenshot?

Hi chaps

I cannot explain it, beyond my technical ability, but I can view the postcard on my iPhone when I open up the Discussion Forum and also when I select "View" to open it up.  However, I cannot forward it as an email to my account as it does not open - likewise I cannot open it up on my computer from the Forum!

Thanks Nick - scan received OK

i do not have an example of this censor in my collection, but agree with your 7C50.  Pity thee APO/FPO number is not clear.

Someone must have an example, somewhere......?

Cheers
Tony
